Application

Metapor is a highly reactive metakaolin — a fired clay pozzolan — recovered directly from the Poraver expanded glass production process, carrying trace amounts of fine expanded glass. As a pozzolan, it reacts with hydrated lime to form a partially hydraulic binder: one that cures through a chemical reaction with water rather than relying solely on slow air-carbonation, the way plain lime does.

For natural and lime-based construction, this single property solves one of the most persistent practical problems in the trade — slow set and cure times — while keeping the binder fully mineral and free of Portland cement.

Metapor is used in:

  • Hempcrete & Hemp-Lime Binders: Blended with hydrated lime (commonly at a 1:1 ratio) to create a locally-sourced, partially hydraulic binder for hemp-lime walls, floors, and blocks — accelerating set time and promoting faster drying without imported hydraulic lime (NHL).
  • Lime Mortars & Renders: Improves flexural and compressive strength, reduces shrinkage, and densifies the binder matrix in lime-based mortars and plasters.
  • Foundation & Structural Lime Systems: Enables lime-based mixes to achieve early strength and handle thick applications — such as foundation walls — that plain hydrated lime cannot support on its own.
  • Cementitious Tile Adhesives & Mortars: Functions as a reactive filler and hardening additive, improving rheology and reducing swelling-shrinkage behaviour.
  • General Pozzolanic Enhancement: Wherever a mineral, glass-industry by-product pozzolan is preferred over imported or synthetic supplementary cementitious materials, to reduce embodied carbon and reliance on Portland cement. envelope.

Benefits

  • A true by-product of Poraver's expanded glass process — no additional energy input required for its manufacture
  • Reduces or eliminates the need for imported hydraulic lime (NHL) in hemp-lime and lime-mortar binders
  • Accelerates set time and promotes faster drying in lime-based systems
  • Increases flexural and compressive strength, and densifies the binder structure
  • Reduces shrinkage and improves resistance to sulfate attack
  • No adverse alkali-silica reaction observed in lime-binder testing
  • Purely mineral and Portland-cement-free when paired with hydrated lime
  • Supports a lower embodied-carbon binder strategy for natural building assemblies
