Frequently asked questions

Answers to the questions we hear most often.

Hempcrete is a bio-composite building material made from hemp hurds (the woody core of the hemp stalk) mixed with lime binder and water. It's used primarily for insulation and infill walls. BIOMATERRA supplies a full range of natural building materials: hemp hurds, hemp and wood fiber insulation, lime products, natural finishes, breathable membranes and tapes, and hemp bedding for animals.

Bio-sourced materials like hempcrete and wood fiber insulation offer exceptional thermal and hygric performance — they regulate both temperature and moisture naturally. They're carbon-negative over their lifecycle, non-toxic, and create healthier indoor environments. The look and feel of natural finishes is simply incomparable to conventional materials.

Yes. Hempcrete and other bio-sourced materials can be used legally in Canada, though they may require documentation and in some cases engineer sign-off depending on the province and project type. We're familiar with the regulatory landscape and can help guide you through the process.

There is typically a premium over conventional materials. However, bio-sourced materials offer long-term value through durability, energy savings, and reduced maintenance. We're committed to keeping our pricing as accessible as possible, and we offer additional discounts for projects with a social, community, or affordable housing dimension.

Hempcrete structures have been standing for centuries in Europe. Hemp and lime actually improve over time. the lime continues to mineralize the hemp fibers, creating an increasingly hard and resilient wall. Properly built and maintained, natural buildings are exceptionally long-lasting.

Building with natural materials is different from conventional construction and benefits from experience, but it's also highly accessible. We provide resources and guidance for self-builders, and we offer flexible support models: we can connect you with partner contractors for a full build, work alongside you in a hands-on learning approach, or organize a workshop build where the project becomes a learning experience for volunteers and community members alike.

Very well. Hemp and wood fiber insulation have excellent thermal performance and, crucially, outstanding hygric regulation — they absorb and release moisture without losing effectiveness or promoting mold. This makes them far superior to synthetic insulation in terms of indoor air quality and long-term wall assembly health.
